Juneteenth

What this day represents historically, and why it's important to celebrate it.

History

Juneteenth is celebrated as a day of liberty and justice for all Americans.

1863:

President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed all slaves in rebellious states!

1865:

Communication was much slower before the internet. It took years for the message of freedom to reach the slaves in Galveston, Texas. But, in 1865, Major General Gordon Granger and the Union Army delivered the message that they now were set free!

2021:

President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, officially making Juneteenth a federal holiday in the United States!
